Poetry by Hannah Marie Cox
Below are each of the poetry collections I've published so far, as well as a sample poem from each. I've been writing poetry since I first learned what it was. I was initially drawn in by the rhythm that comes with prose, and eventually learned what it means to make that rhythm yours and use it for self-expression. My all time favorite poet is Emily Dickinson.
It's as Easy as Parting the Sea
Tumultuous Waters
Tumultuous waters
I see so far ahead
If the whole of my future without falter
Is an inch in front of my face instead
Of being so far out
Where I might find my friends
Neat as water moving wherever it wants
Whenever it feels it must move
Neat as the scraggly surface of the rocks
That live on the beach inside their own grooves
Of sand, and the edge of the place where the people live
Neat as the people the sea manages to soothe
The other side of an ocean
That refuses to sleep, refuses to wane
It follows the moon
But could drive one insane
Sleeping like the future
Is exactly one inch deep
Like it could predict winter
And it would never be this neat
Winter and Spring and You and Me
Poems From a World Less Solid
Everyone wants to reach their potential, but no one wants to stop growing
You don’t feel the same way in the fall as you do when it is snowing
One of these things is a lack of warmth while the other is the reason you cherish the spring
But no matter the season or the weather
What if we weathered it together?
I know I’m taking things slow, but that doesn’t mean I want to be left behind
I’m talking about the seasons again like the snow will change anything
I’m talking about time
I’m talking about my ability to rhyme when I feel like it is winter and I’m starting to go blind
The Trees Still Sway Either Way
